022: Transforming Business Culture with Jenean Merkel Perelstein

As a Sociocultural Anthropologist, Jenean Merkel Perelstein has studied behavior change across many different cultures. From the markets and prisons of India to the boardrooms of the United States, Jenean has learned and implemented change strategies that have saved lives and made fortunes.

Jenean is a Business Strategist, U.S. Patent holder, and revered speaker who worked as a medical anthropologist before becoming CEO of Alchemie Academy where she has enriched workplace culture for clients ranging from solopreneurs to fortune 100 companies.  When not speaking, she mentors organizations to grow their workplace culture, develop their leadership skills, and achieve a higher level of positivity, productivity and profitability.

Jenean is the author and creator of Internal Alchemie: The Welcoming Abundance Blueprint and Stand In Your Strength Strategies where she provides training to clients worldwide and certifies coaches to use her models for their own clientele. This work is supported by her book Finding Your Lighthouse: A Leadership Guide to Navigating Change. Looking at organizational culture through the eyes of an anthropologist, she sees the practices occurring outside of policy that often go unnoticed, and hold organizations back from reaching their goals. Beliefs affect a person just as much as they affect business, and vice versa. Corporations are impacted by the culture that is brought up by people’s beliefs. When businesses don’t pay attention to building a positive culture, there can often be chaos.

Beliefs often come from our families, culture of origins, friends, school, parents, and many outside societal events. These things can really shape us and impact a lot of our daily lives. Even negative beliefs that hold us back are created this way.

People are prone to create culture. When multiple individuals get together, especially in a workplace, and share their beliefs, behaviors, attitudes, etc., then that creates a culture within an organization. It’s important to cultivate a healthy company culture by first addressing the beliefs, otherwise the behaviors often cannot change.

5:09 — As an anthropologist, Jenean is interested in looking at the motivation behind why people do what they do. Culture, family, friends, school, and many other societal aspects can deeply affect what we believe.

7:32 — Internal beliefs can make or break someone’s results in life. Too many people in the business world approach behaviors like there’s some kind of “behavior change model,” which supposedly can improve results.  Often, these models are ineffective and backwards. We, as humans, need to change our beliefs first before changing our behaviors.

12:10 — After she moved from the medical world to the business world, Jenean became CEO of a regional youth non-profit. On paper, it seemed like she was wildly successful. Deep inside, however, Jenean’s passionate flame within her heart was dying. She shares how she overcame that.

17:52 — Jenean used to hold onto a destructive scarcity belief. She used to believe that if she had abundance, in any area of her life, then she was prone to losing it. By rewiring her brain, Jenean was able to completely cure herself from that destructive belief.

21:16 — We all have our own set of behaviors that were set by our beliefs and values. When people in the workplace come together and share their beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes, that’s called the company “culture.”

32:30 — People should love to come to work. 85% of Americans don’t want to come to work in the morning. Jenean is starting a movement that it’s no longer okay for people to go to work unhappy. Business needs to take care of people first, instead of taking care of systems first.

That’s when she realized that it’s a choice, she’s not a victim, and she can stand in her own strength if she wants to.
